The University Grants Commission (UGC) has instructed higher education institutions across India to incorporate approved SWAYAM Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) into their degree programmes for the July 2026 semester. In communications to universities and colleges, the UGC asks institutions to map selected SWAYAM courses to their existing syllabi and academic plans, circulate the approved list internally, and facilitate student registration by the deadlines set by the relevant national coordinators. The move is framed as aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, including goals such as multidisciplinary education, academic flexibility, broader course choices, and credit-based learning. Under the UGC (Credit Framework for Online Learning Courses through SWAYAM) Regulations, students can earn up to 40% of the total credits of a programme through online credit courses completed during a semester. For July 2026, the Ministry of Education has approved a new set of MOOCs hosted by national coordinators, with the complete list and registration timelines available on the SWAYAM portal. The UGC also permits institutions that adopt relevant UGC examination frameworks to conduct SWAYAM end-term examinations on their own campuses, in addition to assessments handled by platforms such as NTA and NPTEL.
