Police in Sokoto State say they foil a suspected bandit attack on Daraye Village in Wamako Local Government Area early on Saturday. According to reports, security agencies receive a distress call around 1:35 a.m. that a large group of armed bandits has invaded the community. Officers from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Village Crime Reduction Unit (VCRU), and other tactical teams are deployed to support personnel at the Wamako Divisional Headquarters.
Police say the operatives engage the assailants in a gun duel after arriving at the scene. The police report that the bandits abandon their mission and retreat into the forest. A subsequent search of the surrounding bushes leads to the killing of one suspected attacker. Authorities also recover an AK-47 rifle and live ammunition, including a magazine containing 28 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition.
Police add that patrols in the area are intensified to reassure residents and prevent further attacks, and nearby divisions are placed on alert to intercept suspects who may flee to seek medical treatment.
