Authorities in Memphis say two members of the Tennessee National Guard fatally shot a man during a predawn foot pursuit downtown. Multiple outlets report that the incident occurs after police received reports of gunfire and that the National Guard members, assigned to patrol with local law enforcement, became involved while responding to the shots-fired call around 4 a.m. According to police and state officials cited by several sources, the Guard members pursued a man who was fleeing on foot. Investigators say the man was armed with a handgun and turned toward the soldiers, at which point the soldiers opened fire. The man later died from the gunshot wounds. Several reports identify the person killed as 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson. The case is under investigation by state authorities, with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation described as handling the matter, rather than Memphis police. Reports also note the National Guard members were deployed as part of a task force connected to President Donald Trump’s anti-crime efforts, created through a “Memphis Safe Task Force” associated with Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee’s administration. The precise sequence of events and the circumstances leading up to the shooting remain subject to ongoing investigation.
