Six people, including five children, die after a residential building collapses in Mumbai as monsoon rains batter the city, officials say. The collapse occurs in the Mankhurd area in the east of the megacity, where a dilapidated structure gives way and traps residents under debris. Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde says the incident involves multi-storey houses in a slum, with the victims reported to include young children and one woman.
As rain continues, authorities report widespread disruption across Mumbai and surrounding areas. Heavy rainfall floods roads and paralyses parts of the city, with the India Meteorological Department recording more than 200 mm of rain in 24 hours. A red alert is issued for Mumbai, forecasting continued heavy rain and gusty winds. Due to the weather, the city closes schools and colleges on Monday, and officials warn residents to stay indoors because of risks such as falling trees and branches.
Separate reports also say landslides affect the expressway connecting Mumbai and Pune, forcing it to close and disrupting travel between the two cities.
