India’s armed forces are reportedly reviewing the Agnipath scheme as the first Agniveer cohorts near the end of their four-year tenure. Multiple reports say service chiefs are considering raising the current permanent retention ceiling of 25%, which determines how many Agniveers can be offered longer-term recruitment.
According to the reports, the Indian Navy has suggested retaining a much higher share—around 70–75%—while the Indian Army and Indian Air Force have proposed raising retention to around 50%. Alongside the retention proposals, additional welfare measures are also being considered, as services reassess manpower and continuity needs after the initial batches reach completion.
Mint notes that Agniveer training started in early 2023, with the first batches expected to finish their four-year term later in 2023. Times of India and Swarajya both indicate that discussions are under way and that no formal approval has been announced by the Ministry of Defence. Until the government finalizes a decision, the existing 25% retention policy remains in force.
