At the TV BAFTAs, Coogan is asked about the exit and tells Deadline that the situation “went in a different direction,” describing it as a mutual decision based on what was and was not working in terms of the character and the overall story dynamic. He adds that the part has been rewritten from scratch. The Independent frames Coogan’s comments as indicating it “wasn’t working.”
In separate reporting referenced by HuffPost UK, Variety cites unnamed sources alleging creative differences related to how the character would be portrayed, while Bonham Carter’s team denies any suggestion she left due to a dispute with co-star Sandra Bernhard, noting the two reportedly had not even met.
