Nigeria’s opposition figure Peter Obi criticizes President Bola Tinubu over the prolonged abduction of schoolchildren in Oyo and Borno states. Obi, speaking through a post on his verified X account, says that more than 50 days after the Oyo abductions, there has been no “tangible rescue effort.” He characterizes Tinubu’s handling of the incidents as showing “incapacity and lack of compassion,” and warns that the situation reflects a broader leadership crisis.
Obi says he has appealed publicly to the kidnappers for the children’s release and that he personally called Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo to show solidarity. He also says he visited Ibadan on July 3 with Prof. Pat Utomi to meet Makinde. Obi claims Makinde had not received a call from Tinubu regarding the crisis, contrasting this with how he says past presidents engaged state leaders during major security challenges.
Obi references the 2014 Chibok girls abduction and argues that, unlike the current situation, authorities then provided regular updates despite delays he said were associated with national-level contact.
