The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has approved a proposal to rename Jalalabad, a town in Shahjahanpur district, as “Parshurampuri.” Multiple outlets report that the decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, following earlier clearance at the Centre level. Mint and Times of India both state that the change was backed after the Union government approved the proposal last year, while the UP cabinet gives final approval at present.
The name “Parshurampuri” is linked to a long-standing local demand that the town is the birthplace of Lord Parshuram. Reportedly, state and central authorities considered proposals and approvals as part of the process. Times of India also notes the timing ahead of state elections, describing the move as aligned with a wider state government agenda related to religious heritage sites.
Alongside the renaming, Free Press Journal reports that the cabinet meeting cleared additional proposals, including other policy and institutional decisions, but the agreed-upon point across sources remains the official rename of Jalalabad to Parshurampuri.
