The Indian Navy will commission its indigenous stealth frigate INS Mahendragiri (F38) in Visakhapatnam on July 11. Multiple reports identify Mahendragiri as the sixth ship in a planned batch of seven Project 17A indigenous stealth frigates. The frigate is designed by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, with components reportedly sourced in large part domestically.

Officials cited across the outlets say Mahendragiri is equipped for multiple mission types, including anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine operations. It carries an advanced integrated combat management system and a sensor and weapons suite with indigenous and state-of-the-art systems, including missile capabilities such as BrahMos and Barak-8. Additional capabilities mentioned include electronic warfare features and anti-submarine warfare systems.

The reporting also frames the ship as strengthening maritime security and broader operational roles such as power projection, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, search and rescue, and sustained presence.
