India’s Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is working with industry to identify around 100 products that are either not manufactured in India or are produced in insufficient quantities, with the goal of expanding domestic manufacturing for both Indian and international markets. DPIIT secretary Amardeep Singh Bhatia says a preliminary list of “unique and interesting” products has already been identified, including auto-sector items such as axles and motorcycle components. The department plans further identification of additional products that remain underproduced. Bhatia also outlines a “Made in India Brand Scheme” that would offer participating products a brand logo and indicate value addition while assuring quality. He says the scheme has already had a pilot run in the steel sector, which he describes as encouraging, and that industry consultation will take place before finalizing which sectors are covered. Bhatia urges companies to invest in India on a long-term basis and notes that India’s free trade agreements could increase demand for domestic businesses. He also points to rapid advances in artificial intelligence as a factor affecting manufacturing productivity and innovation.
