The Calgary Flames sign defenseman Simon Nemec to a five-year contract on Monday. Multiple outlets report the deal is worth $36.25 million, which translates to $7.25 million per year. The contract also affects Calgary’s salary cap at $7.25 million through the 2030-31 NHL season.

The signing follows Calgary’s acquisition of Nemec from the New Jersey Devils last month, when the Flames acquired his rights in a trade that included winger Maxim Tsyplakov from New Jersey. Reports state the trade package also involves a second-round pick this year, two conditional first-round picks, and prospect Etienne Morin.

One source describes Nemec as a 22-year-old restricted free agent coming off the previous season with New Jersey, where he recorded 26 points in 66 games. With the agreement now finalized, Calgary retains Nemec under the multi-year contract after bringing him over from the Devils.
