Wildlife authorities in Sultan Kudarat are investigating a rare “white” monkey believed to be a Philippine long-tailed macaque spotted in the mountains of Senator Ninoy Aquino. The animal appears unusual because of its white pigmentation, and biologists and experts say they are still determining what caused the anomaly. Reports describe the macaque as having been seen by residents for about a decade in a forested area, becoming a familiar sight to some locals. The attention intensified after videos and photographs circulated on social media, raising conservation concerns due to increased curiosity and potential disturbance. In response, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region XII and local officials have tightened protection measures around the area where the macaque is often seen. Multiple reports say access restrictions and a temporary closure of parts of the forest are being implemented to reduce human interference and protect the monkey’s habitat. The sightings are linked to Barangay Bugso and nearby areas in Senator Ninoy Aquino, where the first documented video was reportedly captured by an indigenous tour guide and promptly reported to municipal offices.
