NCERT has published a revised edition of the Class 8 Social Science textbook, updating the chapter “The Role of the Judiciary in Society” after the Supreme Court ordered the withdrawal of the earlier version. Multiple reports say the revised edition removes content that drew controversy, including references to “corruption in the judiciary,” discussion of judicial backlog, and certain discussions linked to landmark Supreme Court judgments that were present in the withdrawn textbook. The chapter is also changed at the outset: the “Big Questions” section now focuses on why justice matters for creating a “just and harmonious society,” rather than why an independent judiciary is necessary.
The updated chapter places greater emphasis on the judiciary’s constitutional role and expands coverage of Public Interest Litigation (PIL) under Articles 32 and 226, including examples such as the Hussainara Khatoon undertrial prisoner case, environmental litigation associated with MC Mehta, and the Vishaka workplace sexual harassment judgment. NCERT says the revision follows compliance with Supreme Court directions in a suo motu writ petition and was carried out through an expert committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Education.
