The Director-General of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Professor Ayo Omotayo, apologises to the Berom people and Plateau State over remarks he made during a television interview following an attempted attack on the institute. Reports say Omotayo faced backlash after describing the attackers as “Berom Militias” during an interview on Arise TV, amid an evolving security situation. Several individuals and groups, including lawmakers, youth associations, and traditional and religious leaders, criticised the comment as derogatory toward the Berom ethnic group.
In response to the condemnation, Omotayo issues an apology on Monday, June 6, stating that the remarks were taken out of context and that he did not intend to blame the Berom people or suggest the existence of an organised militia linked to the Berom Nation. He writes an apology letter to the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, His Royal Majesty Da Jacob Gyang Buba.
Omotayo also urges stakeholders to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tension while security agencies continue investigations into the attempted attack.
