Uttar Pradesh to plant 35 crore saplings on July 12 under Maha Vriksharopan 2026

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said that the mega plantation drive, 'Maha Vriksharopan 2026' with a target to plant 35 crore saplings across the state under the central theme "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" (One Tree in the Name of Mother), is a grand endeavour to express gratitude to Mother Earth.

Gorakhpur, July 11: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will launch the statewide Paudharopan Mahayagya - 2026 from Gorakhpur on Sunday (July 12). On Sunday morning, he will plant saplings near the Gorakhpur Link Expressway and along Tal Ring Road near RKBK under the 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' campaign. On this occasion, he will address a public gathering and urge the people of the state to participate responsibly in the Paudharopan Mahayagya. Uttar Pradesh Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Forest and Environment Dr Arun Kumar Saxena will also be present with the Chief Minister on the occasion of the launch of the Paudharopan Mahayagya. Lucknow, July 9: On the directions of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, large-scale plantation will also be carried out along roads across Uttar Pradesh. Saplings will be planted along roads managed by all expressways, the Public Works Department, Gram Panchayats, Housing Development, Panchayati Raj, Urban Development and other departments. Lucknow, July 8: The Forest Department has completed all preparations for Plantation Mahayagya (July 12, 2026), under which 35 crore saplings will be planted, as well as for other special plantation events. For this, 57.62 crore saplings have been prepared in more than 2,600 nurseries across the state. Lucknow, July 7: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the state government will plant 35 crore saplings on July 12. This "Hariyali Ka Utsav" will be celebrated across the state through public participation. In this regard, Forest Minister (Independent Charge) Dr. Arun Kumar Saxena held a meeting with state government ministers at the Parijat Auditorium of the Forest Headquarters to review preparations for the successful implementation of Vriksharopan Mahayagya-2026.The Forest Minister stated, “A statewide mega plantation campaign will be carried out on July 12 with the cooperation of all departments.” He noted that 35 crore saplings will be planted across the state in a single day through public participation. The mega campaign will be conducted as a public festival with the participation of departments of the Central and State Governments, public representatives, social organisations, schools, colleges, and the general public.He informed that the nodal Forest Department will plant the highest number of saplings at 15.50 crore, followed by the Rural Development Department with 10 crore, the Agriculture Department with 3.25 crore, the Horticulture Department with 1.50 crore, and the Panchayati Raj Department with 1.22 crore saplings. In addition, 5.50 lakh saplings will also be planted along the Ganga Expressway. This year, several new forests, including Samaras Van, Samriddhi Van, Krishi Van, Urja Van, and Kapi Van, will also be established.The Forest Minister informed that Mission Chhaya, Aviral Dhara Poudharopan, Sahjan Bhandara, and Aam Bhandara will also be key components of the campaign. He added by saying, "The success of the campaign will not be measured merely by achieving the plantation target, but by ensuring the protection of every sapling planted until it grows into a tree. It was informed in the meeting that the state has set a target of increasing green cover to 15 percent by 2030 and to 20 percent by 2047. To achieve this, an action plan has been prepared to plant 35 crore saplings every year over the next five years, which will develop the capacity to absorb approximately 72 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.According to the details presented in the meeting, Uttar Pradesh has achieved remarkable success in expanding its green cover. Between 2017 and 2023, the state recorded a historic increase of nearly 3.38 lakh acres in forest and tree cover. According to the India State of Forest Report, the state's forest and tree cover has increased from 9.18 percent in 2017 to 9.96 percent. The percentage of tree cover outside forest areas is higher than the national average, while the rate of increase in carbon stock has also been recorded as better than the national average. Between 2017 and 2025, a total of 242 crore saplings were planted in the state, whereas between 2009 and 2016 the figure stood at 51.48 crore.It was also informed in the meeting that to ensure adequate availability of saplings, the state has significantly expanded its network of nurseries. At present, along with 1,939 departmental nurseries, more than 50 crore saplings have been made available through horticulture, sericulture, and private nurseries. He said, all beneficiaries of the PM Kisan Samman Nidhi should be linked with this campaign. Maximum biodiversity should be ensured among the saplings to be planted, with a balanced inclusion of fruit-bearing, shade-giving, medicinal, and timber species. Under Mission Chhaya, shade-giving trees will be planted along roads and at public places to reduce the impact of heat waves.
