Maharashtra will require applicants to submit a domicile certificate to obtain a driving licence starting 1 August 2026, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik said in the state legislative assembly on Tuesday. The minister stated that the proposal for the revised driving licence rules has been sent to the Law and Judiciary Department for approval and will be implemented only after receiving the necessary clearance.
Sarnaik made the announcement while responding to a question raised by MLA Dilip Lande during the Question Hour. Both outlets report the same date and policy intent: to make the process more streamlined by requiring proof of domicile at the licensing stage.
Separately, the minister also said the state is taking action against unauthorised bike taxi services. He added that the government is working on a regulatory framework to legalise and regulate the sector, with the aims of generating state revenue and creating employment opportunities for young people. The reports do not provide further details on the scope of enforcement or the structure of the proposed regulatory framework for bike taxis.
