On the second day of Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial, the prosecution presented a portion of a longer video in which Duterte makes remarks interpreted as violent threats toward President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., his wife Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former House Speaker Martin Romualdez. Reports say the clip was taken from a video described as lasting more than two hours. Senate impeachment judge Francis Escudero allowed prosecutors to show only a limited segment, about two minutes, citing that only the relevant portion would be presented. The defense opposed the move and sought to prevent or limit the playback. The prosecution said it would not show the entire video, and it planned the presentation as part of the House panel’s direct examination of NBI agent John Mark Calilung, who handled aspects of an investigation connected to a claim associated with Duterte’s proclamation that she had hired someone to assassinate Marcos Jr. After the video was shown, coverage notes that the court denied multiple defense motions. Separate reporting also indicates that the defense may present the entire video during its own phase of evidence. The prosecution also signaled it would subpoena Duterte to testify as the trial proceeds.
