Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms hit parts of China’s Hubei province overnight into Monday, according to state media reports cited by multiple outlets. Xinhua reports the weather affects about 14,600 people across several areas in eastern Hubei. The storms leave at least 11 people dead, with hundreds more injured; reported figures include more than 330 injuries and one person missing. Damage is reported in multiple locations, including collapsed homes and damage to thousands of others. In Huanggang city, a rare EF2 tornado is reported to have swept through, damaging buildings and disrupting operations at a logistics company and a warehouse project, where multiple trucks were lifted or displaced by strong winds. France 24 also reports that two rare tornadoes tear through central cities in Hubei, with winds reaching up to 149 kph (about 92.6 mph), overturning cars. Tornadoes are typically more common in China’s southern and coastal provinces, and are described as rare in Hubei, where severe weather is less frequent. Authorities continue to assess damage and respond to the aftermath.
