In Kaduna State, a mob in Gidan Kalu Village, Birnin Yero (Igabi Local Government Area) kills two travellers after residents accuse them of kidnapping. Police say the victims—Muhammadu Sani, 45, and Aliyu Mohammed, 40—were travelling by motorcycle to Tudun Wada, Zaria, on July 1 to visit an ailing uncle when suspicion arose. According to the Kaduna State Police Command, residents raised an alarm, shouting “thieves,” after noticing the men on a new motorcycle. The victims abandoned the motorcycle and tried to flee, but they were pursued, beaten and lynched to death despite their claims of innocence.
Police respond to the incident and arrest six suspects, including Abdullahi Mukailu Kigo. Police say the suspects confess to involvement and are held in custody, while efforts continue to identify and arrest additional participants. The Kaduna State Police Commissioner, Rabiu Muhammad, condemns the killings, describing the “jungle justice” as unlawful, unacceptable and inconsistent with the presumption of innocence. He says those found culpable will be prosecuted. The report also notes the incident comes weeks after another fatal mob attack in the same area involving false kidnapping allegations.
