Jamaica says it is providing humanitarian assistance to Venezuela following twin earthquakes in northern Venezuela that have killed people, injured others, displaced families and caused widespread damage. Jamaica’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, announces that the assistance is part of broader Caribbean efforts coordinated by the Government of Guyana under the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) framework.
Johnson Smith says Jamaica is responding in the spirit of regional solidarity, citing Venezuela’s support to Jamaica after Hurricane Melissa. She adds that Jamaica’s contribution supports relief and early recovery needs in affected communities.
According to the reports, Jamaica’s aid includes a mix of pharmaceutical supplies and food items. The outlets also describe the impact of the earthquakes, noting a death toll that has risen to more than 3,500, along with significant injuries and displacement.
Jamaica’s government positions its support as an expression of continued friendship with Venezuela as families grieve, injured people receive care, and communities begin recovery.
