Guyana’s government is distributing cash grants to rice farmers in several regions as part of a nationwide support programme aimed at reducing production costs and strengthening the rice industry. The distributions follow a commitment attributed to President Dr. Irfaan Ali. In Region Three, farmers begin receiving more than $201 million in cash grants at an event held at the Leonora Track and Field Centre on Tuesday. The allocation is reported to benefit 560 farmers cultivating rice.
In Region Six, Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha leads the distribution of relief cheques to hundreds of rice farmers, with the reported amount reaching $862 million. The same presidential commitment is cited as the basis for the assistance.
In Region Five, rice farmers receive more than $1.18 billion, described as the largest allocation under the programme. The report says 1,387 farmers benefit, having cultivated 104,519 acres during the last crop. Overall, the articles describe similar measures of government support being rolled out region by region through cash grant cheques to qualifying rice farmers.
