Fulham appoints former Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa as its new head coach, with the club confirming a three-year contract. Arbeloa, who played in the Premier League earlier in his career with Liverpool, succeeds Marco Silva at Craven Cottage. Silva leaves Fulham after guiding the club to an 11th-place finish in the Premier League last season and then moves to Benfica.

Arbeloa, 43, is a member of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning squad and brings prior experience as a head coach from his time at Real Madrid earlier this year. The Real Madrid spell included cup and league exits and the club also went out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals. Upon taking up the role at Fulham, Arbeloa says the appointment is an “honour” and highlights the responsibility of the new position.
