Dwayne Johnson says he found social media memes about Maui’s wig in Disney’s live-action “Moana” “very, very funny.” Speaking at the film’s Los Angeles premiere, Johnson told Variety that he went through 12 different Maui wig options before choosing the final look for the remake. He said that when people first saw him in the wig during early publicity, he laughed at the online reaction. Johnson described the internet’s response as something that “did the internet,” adding that viewers should see the movie before judging what they were seeing.
He also addressed speculation about whether he wore the wig outside filming, saying he never wore it “out and about,” but joking that he could “maybe confirm” he wore it around 2:00 a.m. on a Saturday, after having “a lot of tequila.”
The live-action “Moana” stars Johnson as the demi-god Maui, reprising his voice role from the original animated film released about a decade earlier.
