The International Monetary Fund (IMF) appoints Silvana Tenreyro as its new Economic Counsellor and Director of the Research Department. Tenreyro, a former member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee and a professor at the London School of Economics, is set to take up the role on August 10. She succeeds Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, who returns to academic work. The IMF makes the appointment as global economic conditions face multiple pressures, including slowing growth, trade tensions, inflation concerns, and geopolitical uncertainty. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva praises Tenreyro as a highly regarded economist with both academic credentials and policy experience, saying the appointment will help strengthen the IMF’s research, policy advice, and global economic monitoring during a period of significant change. Tenreyro’s background includes teaching since 2004 at LSE and prior work connected to central banking and policy institutions. Sources also note her international academic and professional experience, including earlier roles linked to the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and participation in monetary policy work in other jurisdictions, alongside her ongoing advisory activities connected to the IMF.
