Peter Obi, presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says he may not live long enough to contest the 2027 election. In comments made during a podcast/interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, he tells listeners that “every single thing” he does is being deliberately frustrated by the current government. Obi adds that there is a possibility he could be prevented from contesting, and that he sometimes fears he may not be alive by then.

Across reports, Obi frames his claims as allegations of harassment and obstruction rather than a direct legal accusation. He says opposition figures are being targeted and says he has personally experienced difficulties, including his car being locked at an airport and people around him avoiding him in public for fear of repercussions. He also alleges that even attendance at family events has been discouraged by supporters who fear his presence could attract unwanted attention.

As of the time these stories were published, none of the outlets report a response from the Federal Government to Obi’s claims.
