A near-miss involving two Air India-group flights occurs at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai on Tuesday night, according to reports. Around 9:40–9:40 pm, Air India Express flight AIX1547 (a Boeing 737 MAX 8) is arriving on Runway 27 and is still rolling out and vacating the active strip. At the same time, Air India flight AI816 (a Boeing 777-300ER) begins take-off roll on Runway 27 after being cleared by air traffic control. As the 777 accelerates, the ATC tower identifies the developing hazard and issues an urgent instruction to abort the take-off. The crew brings the aircraft to a safe halt using rejected-takeoff procedures at about 60 knots (roughly 111 km/h). No injuries or reported structural damage are mentioned.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) initiates a high-level inquiry, with reported focus on ATC sequencing and coordination, including possible data-log and audio review to determine how runway separation was mismanaged at the single-runway airport. The incident is also discussed in the context of Mumbai’s capacity pressure and tight runway spacing, with wet monsoon conditions and night operations cited as factors that reduce margins for safe timing. Reports state Air India later departs after required inspections and lands in Delhi early on Wednesday.
