A windstorm affects parts of Jigawa State, killing at least seven people and injuring 53 others, according to the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). The executive secretary, Hannafi Fagam, says the disaster strikes 13 local government areas, damaging homes and public facilities. He reports that windstorm impacts reach 5,403 households in 120 communities. Fagam lists the affected LGAs as Dutse, Miga, Gwaram, Birnin Kudu, Ringim, Kiyawa, Babura, Kiri-Kasamma, Buji, Kaugama, Gumel, Gagarawa and Sule-Tankarkar. The agency says four fatalities occur in Dutse LGA, with one death each recorded in Miga, Ringim and Sule-Tankarkar.
SEMA also states that the windstorm destroys more than 47 primary and secondary schools, three hospitals, and two police stations, along with residential buildings and other public infrastructure. The Jigawa government has approved funds for emergency intervention and relief, while assessments continue to determine the full extent of the damage. SEMA says it is coordinating with relevant stakeholders and urges support from development partners, humanitarian organizations, corporate bodies and individuals to provide relief materials to affected residents.
