Central Railway accelerates restoration work on the Karjat–Lonavala ghat section of the Mumbai–Pune corridor after landslides caused by heavy rain on July 6 disrupt train services. Officials report that one of the three tracks is reopened late on Tuesday, with the middle line cleared around 10.30 pm, but the remaining two lines continue to be repaired round the clock. The first trains to run over the restored line include the 11013 Lokmanya Tilak Terminus–Coimbatore Express (around 12.45 am) and the 11041 Dadar–Sainagar Shirdi Express (around 1.57 am), followed by an up-direction crossing by the 12702 Hyderabad–CSMT Hussain Sagar Express (around 5.09 am). During restoration, the railway imposes speed restrictions (reported as 30 kmph) on the reopened stretch. More than 1,100 workers are deployed despite rain, poor visibility, and strong winds. The work uses specialised equipment such as excavators, JCBs, track machines, ballast rakes, and a boulder special train, along with debris clearing. Railway authorities also carry out safety measures including earth filling and stabilisation works such as gabion retaining walls, rockfall fencing replacement, and rock bolting to secure vulnerable slopes. Passengers are advised to check NTES and official helplines for updates.

Central Railway has intensified restoration work on a war footing to normalise train services on the Lonavala-Karjat section after multiple landslides triggered by heavy rain disrupted operations on July 6. One of the three railway lines was restored at 10.30 pm on Tuesday, while work to reopen the remaining two lines is continuing round the clock. The first down train to pass through the restored line was the 11013 Lokmanya Tilak Terminus-Coimbatore Express at 12.45 am on Wednesday, operating with a speed restriction of 30 kmph. The 11041 Dadar-Sainagar Shirdi Express followed at 1.57 am. In the up direction, the 12702 Hyderabad-CSMT Hussain Sagar Express crossed the section at 5.09 am. Railway officials said more than 1,100 labourers have been deployed to clear debris and restore services at the earliest despite continuous rain, poor visibility and strong winds in the ghat section. To accelerate restoration, Central Railway has deployed specialised equipment, including a Boulder Special train, a ballast rake, a Unimat track tamping and lining machine, a Duomatic track tamping machine, eight Poclain excavators and 12 JCB machines for debris clearance and track repairs. Labour special trains are also being operated to transport workers to the affected sites wherever possible. Officials said the safety and welfare of workers have been prioritised, with raincoats, gumboots and other protective gear provided. Temporary tents have been set up for rest, while food, tea and snacks are being supplied at the work sites. Senior Central Railway officers are supervising the restoration work on site. Railway authorities have urged passengers to check the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) app or contact the railway helpline for the latest train updates, adding that regular information is also being shared through official social media channels. The landslides, triggered by heavy rainfall on July 6, led to the cancellation, diversion, short-termination, short-origination and rescheduling of several trains on the busy Mumbai-Pune route. Central Railway has appealed to passengers to cooperate as restoration continues.
3 hours agoMumbai: Central Railway has stepped up restoration work in the landslide-hit Karjat–Lonavala Ghat section, with more than 1,100 workers deployed round the clock to restore damaged tracks and secure the vulnerable hillside. One of the three railway lines was reopened late on Tuesday after emergency repairs, while work is continuing at full pace on the remaining two lines. The restoration follows the July 6 landslide that badly damaged the busy ghat section, disrupting train services between Mumbai and Pune and affecting thousands of passengers. The restoration covers all three tracks across the 27-km Lonavala–Karjat Ghat section, involving repair and safety work over a total of 81 km. The worst-hit stretch is the 12-km section between Thakurwadi and Khandala, where repeated landslides and soil erosion weakened the railway formation. To prevent further damage, engineers are constructing gabion retaining walls on the valley side, carrying out large-scale earth filling, reinstalling damaged rockfall fencing and using rock bolting to stabilise vulnerable rock faces. BMC Told To Halt Illegal Construction, Shut Unauthorised Hotel In MumbaiHeavy machinery, including Poclain excavators, JCBs, ballast rakes, track machines and a boulder special train, has been pressed into service. Special labour trains are also transporting workers to the site, while senior railway officials are monitoring the work. The middle line was reopened at 10.30 pm on July 7 under a 30 kmph speed restriction, allowing the first trains to pass through the section during the night. However, normal services are yet to resume.
