Two 15-year-old boys are detained in San Mateo after a Waymo robotaxi detects them drinking alcohol and firing an Orbeez-style gel-bead blaster from inside the vehicle. According to police, Waymo’s internal monitoring systems—using interior cameras and microphones—spot suspicious behavior during the ride and contacts the San Mateo Police Department around 2:10 p.m., providing the vehicle’s location. Police then conduct what they describe as a high-risk stop, with officers arriving with guns drawn and a K9 unit. No injuries are reported.
Officers stop the vehicle after Waymo pulls it over in a nearby area, and police remove the teenagers from the car. The initial report reportedly described what looked like a real firearm, prompting an armed response. Inside, police find an Orbeez-style toy gun, described as painted to resemble a real weapon, along with open alcohol.
The teens cooperate with authorities, are detained, and are released to their parents. The case is forwarded to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s office for review of potential charges, including those related to underage drinking. Waymo says the behavior violates its user agreement and emphasizes safety.
