BuzzFeed has agreed to sell a controlling majority stake to media entrepreneur Byron Allen in a $120 million transaction. Multiple outlets report that Allen Family Digital, an affiliate associated with Allen, will acquire about 52% of BuzzFeed’s outstanding shares at $3 per share, giving Allen control of the company. BuzzFeed also reports that Jonah Peretti, the company’s co-founder and current CEO, will step down as chief executive and transition to a newly created role focused on AI, described as president of BuzzFeed AI.

The deals includes plans for operational changes. Peretti and others involved indicate that Allen’s arrival will be accompanied by “significant” cost reductions and restructuring efforts, including references to BuzzFeed Studios and Tasty being separated into an independent entity. Outlets also note that BuzzFeed shares rise sharply on the announcement.

Beyond corporate leadership, Allen’s existing media presence is linked to changes in television scheduling: his program, Comics Unleashed, is set to replace Stephen Colbert’s Late Show slot on CBS later this month. Articles also describe BuzzFeed’s recent financial and strategic pressures as the digital advertising and social-media traffic environment has shifted.
