The Department of State Services (DSS) says it has arrested and is holding journalist Zainab Sodiq over allegations that she had an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) drone without the required documents. DSS officials state that operatives of Aviation Security (AVSEC) of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and DSS intercepted Sodiq at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on July 6 as she attempted to travel to Abuja. DSS says the drone was being carried “en route Abuja” from the border control point, and that Sodiq lacked an “End User Certificate” (EUC).

DSS spokesman Favour Dozie says that, after being confronted, Sodiq admitted she did not have the documents. The DSS allows Sodiq to board her scheduled flight due to a prior engagement, but directed her to report on Wednesday, 8 July, to continue an investigation. The agency says the action is taken under National Security Adviser regulations restricting acquisition and use of drones, and that DSS can impound and sanction individuals or organisations operating drones without approval. Presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore had accused DSS of unlawful detention. All parties continue to reference an ongoing investigation.
