A venomous snake bites four girl students in the hostel of a private higher secondary residential school in Lohardaga district, Jharkhand, and one student dies, police said. The incident happens on Tuesday night, after the students return to their ground-floor hostel room following dinner and sleep. According to a school representative, the snake enters the room and bites one student; when she screams, the others wake, but the snake bites three additional students.
The 12-year-old girl who is bitten later dies. The other three students are taken for medical care: two are treated at Lohardaga Sadar Hospital, while one is referred to RIMS (Regional Institute of Medical Sciences) in Ranchi for further treatment. Police say it is not yet clear how the snake entered the hostel room. The deceased is identified as Varsha Oraon.
Separately, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) takes suo motu cognizance of media reports about the incident. The NHRC issues notices to the Chief Secretary of the state seeking a detailed report within two weeks, including the health status of the injured students.
