Nigeria’s Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and Ghana’s Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen bilateral maritime cooperation. The agreement, signed in Lagos, aims to enhance regional maritime governance and support the sustainable development of the “Blue Economy” across West Africa. NIMASA Director-General Dr Dayo Mobereola speaks at the ceremony, thanking Ghana for its support linked to Nigeria’s re-election to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Category C Council. He says the longstanding relationship between the two countries helps advance maritime development in the region.
The MoU sets out a framework for collaboration in maritime safety and security, including mutual recognition of Certificates of Competency, institutional capacity building, knowledge sharing, comparative research, joint enforcement initiatives, and coordinated positions in international maritime forums. The agreement calls for measurable outcomes through structured implementation, with NIMASA citing a need for annual implementation agendas.
GMA Director-General Dr Kamal-Deen Ali describes the MoU as a milestone and says Ghana is committed to implementing it, noting past benefits from Nigerian initiatives. The agreement includes forming a Joint Consultative Team that develops action plans and monitors programmes, meeting twice yearly with alternating hosts between Nigeria and Ghana, and supports joint efforts against piracy and maritime terrorism in the Gulf of Guinea.
