Prime Minister Mark Carney is gifted a personalized revolver and ammunition by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan during the NATO summit. Multiple outlets report Erdogan, who hosts this year’s summit, gives every NATO leader a firearm engraved with the recipient’s name. Global News adds that the gift includes a placard describing the model as the first type of revolver manufactured in Turkey in the 1990s, and that the commemorative firearms are made by the Turkish state-linked firm MKE.
Canadian officials are also involved in handling the item after the summit. Global News and CityNews Toronto report that Carney surrenders the revolver to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). CityNews Toronto further says the RCMP is decommissioning the weapon so it can no longer fire. Vancouver Sun reports Carney brings the revolver home but leaves the ammunition in Turkey.
The Globe and Mail reports Carney indicates the engraved revolver could be kept in a museum setting, such as the Canadian War Museum, once the review and decommissioning process is complete.
