Malaysia and Thailand resolve a fisheries and seafood trading dispute after meetings between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and his Thai counterpart, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the two countries say. The dispute began in May when Thailand restricted imports of Malaysian-caught sea bass, citing concerns over chemical residues. In response, Malaysia temporarily banned some varieties of Thai shrimp last month as it tightened food-safety controls.

Following the leaders’ discussions on Thursday, both sides say they have settled the outstanding fisheries issue and will resume smoother trade between the neighbours. The leaders also agree to work on developing a special border economic zone, aimed at improving regional economic cooperation.

Across the reports, the focus remains on resolving the food-safety concerns that disrupted seafood imports and exports, and on shifting from trade restrictions toward coordinated economic planning for border areas.
