Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) tells the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) that former men’s basketball head coach Thomas Anthony “Tab” Baldwin does not have an employer-employee relationship with the university. In statements made during the continuation of a DOLE clarificatory hearing, ADMU’s counsel argues that Baldwin served as a consultant rather than an employee. The university says Baldwin’s engagement should be understood in that capacity, not under employment terms that would create an employee-employer relationship.
During the proceedings, ADMU president Fr. Roberto Yap is reportedly asked to attend but sends representatives instead because he is committed to Senate hearings scheduled the same day. Baldwin does not physically attend the hearing. The issue before DOLE centers on the employment status of Baldwin and how the university characterizes his role with the team. Other outlet reporting aligns on ADMU’s position that Baldwin is a consultant, and the matter proceeds through DOLE’s clarification process following Baldwin’s resignation.
