Meta-owned WhatsApp has submitted its reply to India’s government notice regarding a proposed “username” feature, multiple reports say. The government had previously questioned the plan, citing concerns that the feature could materially increase online fraud, phishing, “digital arrest” scams, and impersonation attacks. The “username” feature is designed to allow users to message without sharing their phone numbers.
According to reports, India had instructed WhatsApp not to launch the feature in India until consultations are completed to the government’s satisfaction. WhatsApp later requested additional time to submit its response and indicated it would not roll out the feature in India while discussions are ongoing.
IT Secretary S. Krishnan is reported to have said the company’s response was due on Thursday and that the government is reviewing WhatsApp’s reply. Reports also note the submission comes after the Centre issued its notice earlier in the week, seeking clarification on the implications of the feature for user safety and cybersecurity.
