Danladi Umar, the former Chairman of Nigeria’s Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), is facing corruption and abuse-of-office allegations that are being heard in Abuja. Multiple reports say he was arraigned by the Federal Government on four counts and first remanded in Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre after appearing before an FCT High Court in Maitama. The allegations include that, while in office, he allegedly abused his position to confer an undue advantage on himself, including claims that in 2021 he used his wife’s bank account to collect about N5.5 million from a contractor engaged to paint the Code of Conduct Tribunal’s headquarters.
After the remand, reports state that the court later granted Umar bail. According to outlets, the bail is set at N100 million, with one surety in a like sum. One report also states that the bail order comes after about six days in prison custody. Umar remains subject to the court’s conditions while the case proceeds, with reporting indicating the trial timeline is fixed for a later date.
