Mercedes-AMG has revealed the next-generation CLA 45 as a three-motor electric vehicle with 671bhp, available as both a saloon and a Shooting Brake estate. All-wheel drive comes from two axial-flux motors on the rear axle and one at the front, allowing the rear units to deliver the full output while the front motor engages only when additional traction is needed, such as in performance driving or adverse conditions. The design and chassis are substantially revised to improve aerodynamics and downforce, including a wider stance, adaptive dampers and an active rear spoiler.

The CLA 45 uses a larger 94kWh battery, giving a claimed range of 416 miles for the saloon and 398 miles for the Shooting Brake. Mercedes says it includes predictive battery management to allocate power during longer track sessions, and braking is primarily handled by the electric motors. There is also an AMGFoce simulated engine and gearbox feature that recreates the sound and power delivery of the outgoing turbocharged 45, with “quiet” and “loud” sound modes that can include pops and crackles.

Deliveries are expected to start next year, with pricing not yet confirmed but anticipated to exceed £70,000.
