Greggs is preparing to open its only overseas outlet at Tenerife South airport, bringing its menu to holidaymakers and travellers from later this month. The new branch will be located in the airport departure lounge, where customers will be able to buy Greggs items such as the Spanish Omelette Roll, alongside other items typically offered by the chain.
The company says the move is a trial of expanding outside the UK. Greggs, which was founded in 1939 in Newcastle, has more than 2,500 shops across the UK. It is now “testing spreading our wings” in an overseas setting by starting with a single location in Tenerife.
Greggs previously operated shops abroad in Belgium, with its last international outlet closing in 2008. Tenerife is described as an “ideal location” for the company’s first overseas experiment, allowing it to assess demand among international customers in a travel hub.
