The Allied People’s Movement (APM) calls on President Bola Tinubu’s administration to provide a full, verifiable account of money saved after Nigeria removed the fuel subsidy in May 2023. The party says the government has not clearly explained how trillions of naira reportedly generated from the policy change have been used, while economic hardship worsens for many Nigerians. APM points to Tinubu’s statement at inauguration that “subsidy is gone,” which coincided with a sharp rise in petrol prices from below ₦200 per litre to over ₦1,500, and it links the increase to higher costs for transport, food, education, healthcare, rents and electricity.
APM alleges that more than ₦20 trillion from subsidy removal has not been transparently accounted for, citing reports of corruption and diversion of funds. It also criticises what it describes as conflicting figures from officials and claims of achievements it calls “fictitious.” The party says reforms should be assessed by their impact on citizens’ lives and demands that the federal government publish details of the exact amount saved, how the funds were spent, where projects were carried out, and who benefited.
