Apple is reportedly in talks with PrismML, a startup that compresses large language models so they can run on iPhones instead of requiring server infrastructure. Multiple outlets cite PrismML’s claims that it can reduce the memory footprint of Alibaba’s Qwen model significantly. PrismML says a 27-billion-parameter Qwen model that typically requires about 54GB of storage or memory can be compressed to under 4GB, enabling it to run on an iPhone 15 or newer. Quartz and CNBC both describe the memory reduction as up to 15 times less. The Information is also cited by 9to5Mac and MacRumors as the source for Apple’s interest.
PrismML confirmed the discussions with Apple, according to AppleInsider, and its CEO says Apple and other companies are evaluating its technology. MacRumors adds that the company’s work could allow more parameters to be active simultaneously on-device than some existing Apple approaches, which often use sparse architectures. The reporting suggests the goal is to expand on-device “Apple Intelligence” capabilities while potentially reducing reliance on cloud compute.
