Courts in central Punjab convict at least 64 deportees from Libya and Greece after Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) summary trials in three districts. Reported cases are filed by the FIA through its circles in Gujranwala, Gujrat and Sialkot. Deportees convicted in the proceedings receive average sentences of 10 to 15 days in prison, with the time spent in judicial custody counted toward the final term. The special judges (central) in the three districts also impose fines ranging from Rs25,000 to Rs50,000, after which most defendants are released following payment. Some individuals are convicted under Pakistan’s Emigration Ordinance, including one case in Gujranwala where a court sentences a man under section 17(1) for the period already served and levies a Rs50,000 fine.

An FIA official says Libyan authorities captured at least 200 illegal Pakistani immigrants while they attempt to board boats heading to Italy. The deportees are returned to Pakistan on two special flights, with assistance from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), about a month before the court cases. About 90 deportees from the Gujranwala region are included in the initial group, and trials for remaining deportees continue, with decisions expected soon. The FIA reports receiving about Rs1.05 million in fines so far and placing names on the passport control list, limiting overseas travel for at least five years.
