Federal immigration agents shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during a traffic stop in Houston, Texas, on Tuesday, according to reports. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says the stop was part of an enforcement operation and that Salgado Araujo was not the intended target; it also says agents fired in self-defense after he “weaponized his vehicle” by attempting to run over an officer. DHS adds that the officers were not wearing body cameras. The vehicle carried four men, including Salgado Araujo and three passengers who were arrested after the shooting.

Multiple outlets report that the passengers and advocates dispute DHS’s account. Lawyers and witnesses say there were no ICE officers in front of the van and that any shots came from the sides. Reported surveillance video from KHOU 11 is described as showing agents attempting to box in the van and as conflicting with claims of vehicle ramming, while separate footage is said to show no damage to the agents’ vehicle. Additional reporting says DHS had been seeking two people from Guatemala rather than Salgado Araujo.

Several sources also report that the three detained men are being pressured to sign “self-deportation” or voluntary departure orders, raising concerns from lawmakers and advocates about their ability to act as witnesses. Calls are made for an independent investigation.
