The Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association (JGRA) is condemning recent robberies and violent attacks against service stations and is calling on operators to strengthen on-site security. The association’s statement follows a shooting of a pump attendant while on duty during a robbery on Deanery Road in St Andrew, Jamaica. The JGRA says the attack seriously injured an employee, who remains in critical condition, and it extends condolences and wishes for recovery to the worker’s family. The association reports that police fatally shot two of the men believed to be involved in the incident during an operation after the robbery.
In response, the JGRA urges heightened vigilance by service station staff, including stronger day-to-day awareness measures. It also asks law enforcement partners to maintain consistent patrols at stations to deter criminal activity, despite resource constraints. The association further encourages operators to upgrade closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems where possible to improve surveillance and investigative support, including coordination with the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the JamaicaEye Programme. It notes that many stations have reduced cash handling by moving toward card-based payments. As an additional safety step, customers are being asked to keep vehicle windows down during transactions with customer service agents.
