New York Mets infielder/designated hitter Mark Vientos is placed on the injured list after suffering a right-hand fracture from being hit by a pitch. Multiple reports say the injury occurred Thursday during the second inning of the Mets’ 7–3 win over the Kansas City Royals, when Vientos was struck by a 92 mph fastball from Michael Wacha. The Mets determine the extent of the injury as Vientos begins the recovery process. Interim manager Andy Green says he does not yet know the full scope of the injury or whether surgery is required, while later reporting indicates the team expects Vientos to miss about six to eight weeks. One outlet reports Vientos will not undergo surgery, citing information from an MLB insider. Vientos reportedly said he sensed something was wrong as his hand began throbbing at first base, and the team confirms the fracture after further evaluation.
With Vientos sidelined, New York will adjust its lineup and workload at first base and designated hitter as he recovers from the fracture.
