OpenAI is discontinuing its AI-powered web browser “Atlas,” which launched less than a year ago. Multiple reports say the shutdown reflects a shift in how OpenAI delivers its AI browsing capabilities rather than a complete retreat from the concept. Features previously available in Atlas are being moved into OpenAI’s existing products. Specifically, the companies’ agentic browsing functions are reported to be integrated into ChatGPT, giving users similar capabilities through the chat experience. In addition, OpenAI is launching a new Google Chrome extension to provide these AI browsing features within the Chrome browser environment.

Separately, OpenAI is also upgrading its ChatGPT desktop app to include a built-in browser. The move consolidates browsing-related functionality across OpenAI platforms, using ChatGPT and browser-based tooling rather than maintaining a standalone Atlas web application. One report also highlights that Atlas’s user-facing messaging did not clearly disclose certain “Google detail,” but both accounts agree on the core points: Atlas is being shut down, and the associated capabilities are being rolled into ChatGPT and browser integrations.
