Australia’s domestic Twenty20 cricket competition, the Big Bash League, is scheduled to open its next season in Chennai, India, in December. Big Bash League officials say they are hoping for strong local turnout at MA Chidambaram Stadium, which has a capacity of about 38,000. After months of speculation about the venue and timing, the opening match has been confirmed following an event at the Melbourne Cricket Ground that was led by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The league’s season opener is set to feature the Melbourne Renegades against the Perth Scorchers on Dec. 12. The arrangement marks a departure from the competition’s typical domestic-only schedule and is presented as part of efforts to expand the league’s international visibility and engagement with fans in India.
