Villagers in Chhattisgarh carry out a 15-day water conservation drive that collects rainwater and helps improve groundwater levels. According to reports, communities across 551 gram panchayats build more than 3.41 lakh water conservation structures in the district. The works include soak pits, trenches, check dams and ponds. Times of India and NDTV describe the campaign as a large-scale, community-led effort, with large numbers of residents volunteering to construct the systems within a short period.
The outlets also report that the campaign results in the conservation of about 31 crore litres of water over the 15 days. The initiative focuses on capturing and storing rainwater on-site to reduce runoff and support replenishment of groundwater. Both accounts attribute the scale and speed of the effort to local participation and coordination across multiple panchayats, aiming to build capacity for water management at the village level.
