The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducts searches on Thursday at premises linked to Kalanee Impex Private Limited and its director Dharmesh Narendra Sangani, an associate of actor Shekhar Suman and co-founder of the Shekhar Suman Film Academy. The ED action follows an ongoing investigation under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). Authorities allege that Sangani and the firm are involved in foreign exchange violations connected to overseas business dealings.
According to officials cited by multiple reports, the searches uncover evidence of undisclosed foreign assets and overseas bank accounts, including accounts in Canada and the United States and, in some cases, the UAE. The ED also claims that export proceeds from overseas buyers were not repatriated to India despite delays, and that no extension for realisation of export proceeds was obtained from the authorised dealer bank. The ED further alleges that recovery efforts were not documented and that some export proceeds were received through third parties rather than the consignee or buyer listed in export documents.
The ED also reports that customs authorities in the US and the UK examine certain transactions involving Sangani, while the ED examines possible FEMA violations related to those transactions. Officials also report that Sangani attempted to destroy digital evidence during the searches, leading to a complaint to Mumbai Police.
